Why the ACA Matters to Me
February 24, 2014
This is a guest blog from Amanda Belles, Deputy Director of Private Partnerships for Enroll America. Like many of us, Amanda has personal reasons that keep her motivated day after day. This is her story.
My story is not unique from the millions of other Americans that have a pre-existing condition. Because of a congenital non-progressive muscle myopathy I have had my entire life, like so many others, it has required me to receive more health care than the average person.
However, I knew at a young age that I was one of the lucky ones because my parents had health insurance. When I needed spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis, biopsies, tests, etc., thankfully through my parents’ employers, we had health insurance that covered it. Since then through my own employment, I have been fortunate enough to have always had health insurance. But what if that hadn’t been the case? What would I have done?
Until the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law, there were 57.2 million Americans under the age of 65 with a pre-existing condition that could have potentially been denied or charged more for health insurance.
Having access to affordable, quality health insurance should not be about luck. Thanks to the ACA, it no longer is. Now, you can no longer be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition, and you now have access to the same health plans in the Marketplace that all Americans do, regardless of your circumstances.
Because of the ACA, “luck” has become a “reality” for all Americans.
February is National Wise Health Care Consumer Month, which is all about encouraging people to know their health care options and become an informed consumer. There are just 35 days left to become an informed consumer and sign up for a quality, affordable health plan before the March 31st deadline.
Unfortunately, many people don’t know about their new options or the deadline (which will be here sooner than you know it). Will you help us get the word out? Please click here and share some of these fun graphics with your networks to help us raise awareness!
