After “I Do”
June 3, 2014
Wedding season is here!
Every summer, thousands of couples tie the knot. Chances are you know someone who is getting married this year. But maybe you didn’t know that getting married could allow you to get covered.
That’s right! While the Health Insurance Marketplaces don’t open until November 15th, certain life events (like getting married, having a baby, moving, or losing your current health insurance) could allow you to get covered. Here’s what you need to know if you’re getting married:
- You have 60 days from the day you get married to sign up and pick a plan.
- You can change your existing plan, sign up for a new plan, join your spouse’s plan or add them to yours, or add any dependents to your plan.
- Most people will get help paying for insurance, or even qualify for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid. If you qualify for Medicaid, you can sign up at any time throughout the year.
- If you don’t have health insurance, you might have to pay a fine.
So after the vows, the first dance, and the tossing of the bouquet, make sure your newlywed friends know this one thing: They could get covered!
