Coverage Options for Immigrant Families
August 22, 2014
Did you move to the U.S. from another country? Welcome! You should know that there are affordable health insurance options for immigrant families through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Here’s what you should know.
I’m a legal immigrant. You could qualify for financial help through the Health Insurance Marketplace if you are a U.S. citizen or are a lawfully present immigrant. Depending on your family size, income, and where you live, you might even qualify for free or low-cost coverage.
My immigration status is changing. If you gain a new immigration status, you may qualify for a special enrollment period. If you do, you have 60 days to sign up and pick a plan.
I’m a member of a mixed status household. Many immigrant families have members with different immigration statuses. Qualifying members of mixed status families can get covered in the Marketplace. They could even get financial help, depending on their income. Members of the family who do not apply for coverage in the Marketplace will not be asked about their immigration status.
I’m concerned about my or my family’s privacy. The Marketplace cannot deny you health insurance based on a family member’s status. Information you and your family provide to the Marketplace cannot be used for immigration enforcement.
If you or a loved one are an immigrant, get the facts and see if you could qualify for a special enrollment period today. Otherwise, mark your calendar for November 15th — that’s when the Marketplace opens for business again for everyone!
