Finding a Doctor With Your New Health Insurance Plan
May 26, 2015
So you got covered — congrats! Now it’s time to find a doctor.
Your primary care doctor (sometimes called a general practitioner) will be your first stop when you are sick, hurt, or need a checkup. It’s a good idea to choose a primary care doctor now. That way, when you need care, you’re already a patient.
Here are a few things to think about when looking for a doctor:
- Do they accept your health insurance plan?
- Are they taking new patients?
- Do you prefer to see a male or female doctor?
- Do you need to see a doctor who speaks a certain language?
- Is their office in a location that is easy for you to visit?
If you find a doctor that you think you might like, you can make an appointment for a physical, or annual checkup. Remember: Preventive care is free. That means your annual checkup, well-woman visits, and more are covered — at no cost to you!
