Get Covered America Kicks off “Week of Action” with Community Outreach Events Across Ohio

August 26, 2014

COLUMBUS, OHIO – With less than three months until open enrollment begins on November 15, Get Covered America has launched a statewide Week of Action to reach uninsured Ohioans and educate them about their new coverage options under the Affordable Care Act. Staff and volunteers will be tabling, canvassing, and holding community events throughout the state to educate Ohioans about their new health coverage options.

Get Covered America will be participating in over 20 events in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus to let Ohioans know about opportunities to get covered now along with information on the reopening of the Health Insurance Marketplace on November 15.

In Columbus, staff and volunteers will be canvassing in Weinland Park and other targeted neighborhoods across the city. In Cincinnati, staff and volunteers will be going to local churches and food pantries to talk to local residents about their new health care options. And in Cleveland, staff and volunteers will be hosting informational tables at small businesses like Pendleton Barbershop where customers will have the opportunity to give their contact information for organizers to personally follow up with them with enrollment information.

“It’s important that we begin to lay the groundwork for another successful open enrollment period in Ohio,” said Get Covered America Ohio Organizing Director Chris Keck. “That’s why this week we are focusing entirely on reaching uninsured Ohioans any way that we can and letting them know about new ways they can find quality, affordable health coverage. As the next open enrollment period gets closer, our grassroots efforts become increasingly important in helping so many Ohioans protect themselves and their families.”

Since launching in Ohio last June, the Get Covered America campaign has reached out directly to more than 105,000 consumers; engaged more than 2,900 volunteers and more than 220 partner organizations; and held over 2,500 events to reach out to consumers.

The Weekend of Action launches on the heels of last week’s report that showed nearly 66,000 uninsured Ohioans may be eligible to sign up for coverage before November 15 through a “Special Enrollment Period” that allows uninsured people who experience a life-changing event to get coverage early. These events include the birth of a child, a marriage or divorce, or losing your job-based coverage.

For health care questions or to find out more information on enrollment, Ohioans can visit or call a Get Covered America Ohio office, Cleveland (216-314-2392), Cincinnati (513-667-2304), and Columbus (614-636-0385).
