Health Coverage an Option for Some Texans Right Now
June 18, 2014
Although some uninsured Texans may have to wait until November to enroll in health coverage, there are several groups who can get enrolled now. For example:
- Many kids who qualify for CHIP or Children’s Medicaid and some Medicaid-eligible adults can get free or very low-cost health coverage right away. That’s because Medicaid and CHIP sign-up is any time of year.
- Also enrolling now are people experiencing major life events, like marriage, divorce, certain job changes or health coverage losses, adoption, moves, childbirth, and more. People have 60 days from these events to get themselves covered and avoid paying a fine. Learn more about life events here.
- Small businesses can begin offering health insurance to their employees now. Learn more about small businesses’ option here.
- Members of federally recognized American Indian tribes can enroll in the Marketplace year-round. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, about 1 in 3 American Indians and Alaska Natives live without health insurance, making this opportunity to get covered any time really important. Special financial assistance is also available, including help to bring down the cost of private insurance premiums and no out-of-pocket costs like co-payments or deductibles for many tribal members with moderate to middle-incomes. Learn more about what is available for American Indians (and Alaska Natives) here.
So when is the right time to get covered? Depending on your situation, the time may be right now. Get started today!
