New Data: 84% of Ohioans Enrolling in Coverage through Affordable Care Act Got Financial Assistance
March 10, 2015
COLUMBUS, OH – Today, Get Covered America Ohio State Director Trey Daly released the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) announcement that 234,341 Ohioans enrolled through the Health Insurance Marketplace as of February 22, 2015.
“We’re happy to see that Ohioans are continuing to find quality, affordable health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, with most of them receiving financial help to pay for their plans. The Affordable Care Act has given thousands of uninsured and underinsured Ohioans access to new, affordable coverage options, and it’s clear that Ohioans are taking advantage of this opportunity. In fact, 84% of Buckeye State residents that enrolled received financial assistance to help pay for their plans, making coverage truly affordable for so many.
“We’re also encouraged to see that 47% of enrollees were new consumers, showing that interest in these new health insurance options is widening. While there is still work to be done to ensure everyone can protect themselves and their families with health insurance, today’s announcement shows that we’ve made real progress in Ohio.”
Though the open enrollment period ended on February 15, many Ohioans still have the opportunity to get covered now. Last month, HHS announced a special enrollment period running from March 15 to April 30 this year for consumers who were unaware of how the fine for not having coverage affected them. To be eligible, consumers must attest that they first became aware of the implications of the fine after the end of open enrollment in connection with preparing their 2014 taxes and have paid the fine for not having health coverage in 2014.
For low and moderate income Ohioans who are newly-eligible under expanded Medicaid, enrollment is year round.
