How Ohioans Can Still #GetCovered Through Affordable Care Act Now that the Deadline Has Passed
February 25, 2015
COLUMBUS, OH – The deadline to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act has passed, but many uninsured or underinsured Ohioans still have the opportunity to get quality, affordable health coverage now. Last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a new special enrollment period for this year’s tax-filing season, giving uninsured Ohioans who did not realize they would be fined for not having health coverage another opportunity to enroll in a plan for 2015.
HHS announced there will be a special enrollment period running from March 15 to April 30 this year for those who were unaware of how the fine for not having coverage affected them. To be eligible, consumers must attest that they first became aware of the implications of the fine after the end of open enrollment in connection with preparing their 2014 taxes and have paid the fine for not having health coverage in 2014.
“We’re pleased to see more than 234,000 Ohioans got health coverage during the last enrollment period,” said Get Covered America Ohio State Director Trey Daly. “But we know that many more Ohioans can still get quality, affordable health coverage now and may not know it. That’s why we’ll be continuing our outreach efforts over the coming months to make sure people know their health coverage options and opportunities to get covered now. If you still need coverage and think you meet the qualifications to enroll, act now to ensure you can spend 2015 with quality, affordable health coverage.”
Despite the fact that the open enrollment period through the Health Insurance Marketplace ended on February 15, there may still be options for Ohioans to get covered through a special enrollment period. Consumers may qualify for a special enrollment period if they’ve experienced a qualifying life event such as losing coverage, getting married, having a baby, moving to a different coverage area, and becoming a citizen, among others.
Ohioans enrolling in health coverage through a special enrollment period on the Marketplace are eligible to receive financial assistance to lower their premiums. Last enrollment period, 84% of Ohioans signing up through the Marketplace received financial assistance to help make their plans truly affordable.
Adults under the age of 65 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level ($16,243 for an individual or $33,465 for a household of four) are eligible for expanded Medicaid and enrollment for Medicaid is year-round.
If you are eligible to enroll through a special enrollment period or expanded Medicaid, Ohioans can schedule an appointment with an enrollment assister by visiting the Get Covered Connector, at connector.getcoveredamerica.org or by calling 1-800-648-1176. To find out if you have experienced a qualifying life event, you can visit the HHS screener and answer a few questions.
