Washington, DC – With just four days left to sign up for new health coverage starting on January 1st, the Get Covered America campaign is making its final push of a three-week-long “Coverage is Coming” campaign to make sure uninsured consumers can start off the new year with quality and affordable health coverage. As part of the effort, timed to coincide with the improvements to HealthCare.Gov, Get Covered America staff and volunteers held more than 1,200 events across the country over the past three weeks. For the first time, Get Covered America also added a “chase” program that reached back out to over 50,000 consumers who had already expressed interest to make sure they have the information and resources they need to choose a plan and complete the enrollment process. In all, Get Covered America staff and volunteers have now reached out to more than 410,000 consumers.
“With the website working well for the majority of users and the deadline for January 1 coverage right around the corner, our goal has been to restart conversations we’ve had with consumers about the new health care options available, and let them know that now is the time to enroll,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “What we found is that consumer interest in the new, affordable health care options remains high, that people are undeterred by the website problems, and that many were interested in availing themselves of in-person assistance from a trained expert.”
During the “Coverage is Coming” push, Get Covered America staff have worked with thousands of volunteers to spread the word that December 23 is the deadline to enroll in a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace to have health coverage that starts on January 1, 2014. With events such as toy drives at churches, enrollment fairs with local assistors, and tabling during community holiday celebrations, the campaign continued its education and outreach campaign and added a new “chase” program to follow up with the more than 50,000 uninsured consumers it has identified over the past five months. While many consumers have faced technical challenges with the website, nearly 90% of them are willing to go back and try again. Consumers were also asked how they planned to sign up, and the most popular choice was to use a local in-person assistor. Last month, Get Covered America launched the Get Covered Locator tool to make it easy for consumers to find the closest in-person help available to them.
Over the next four days, Get Covered America will continue following up with uninsured consumers in person, on the phone, and through an aggressive digital campaign, with daily email and text message reminders sent every day through December 23rd.
Get Covered America has grown from a core staff of 8 members in January 2013, to a nationwide team of about 200 employees. More than 140 of those staffers are working on the ground in communities across the country, alongside more than 14,000 volunteers who have donated time to the campaign. That team is rapidly growing, with an average of 356 new volunteers joining the campaign every week.
