More than 150 Partner Organizations Join for Almost 400 Events Nation-Wide to Prepare Uninsured Consumers for Enrollment

Washington, DC – This past weekend, staff and volunteers from the Get Covered America campaign hit the streets for a coordinated weekend of action to reach consumers with the information and resources they need as they prepare to enroll in coverage on the new Health Insurance Marketplace. Nicknamed “Treat Yourself to Coverage Weekend” in the spirit of Halloween, the push marked Get Covered America’s biggest outreach effort yet, with over a thousand volunteers taking part in nearly 400 community events to get families and individuals ready to enroll in the new health insurance options available. On Saturday and Sunday alone, Get Covered America staff and volunteers held tens of thousands of conversations with consumers, and identified more than 7,000 people who are interested in receiving help to enroll in new health insurance options over the next few months.

“As is being repaired, our Get Covered America team is working harder than ever to connect consumers to the resources they need before they begin the enrollment process,” said Anne Filipic, president of Enroll America. “We’re thrilled by the exponential growth of our field program, and we’re confident that when the website is working smoothly at the end of this coming month, the vast network of volunteers we are building will be ready to help the consumers we’re identifying take the next step towards purchasing a quality insurance plan that fits their needs and budget.”

Since launching in June, Enroll America’s Get Covered America campaign has trained and activated over 8,800 volunteers, more than half of whom have joined the effort in just the past month. Over the weekend, more than 1,100 of those Get Covered America volunteers went door-to-door, made phone calls, and participated in 396 community events in 17 states to educate consumers about the new Health Insurance Marketplace. The weekend of action also included the first nationwide push for “Health Care in the Pulpit,” Get Covered America’s faith engagement program. Working with a diverse group of faith and lay leaders, Get Covered America hosted 64 events at places of worship across the country to reach communities of faith with information about the new, affordable coverage options available to the uninsured.

Though the technical problems with remain frustrating, consumers are still eager to learn about their new options and the financial help available to them through the Marketplace, and community groups are partnering with the Get Covered America campaign to answer their questions. From a job fair in Pittsburgh to a New York Presbytery Leaders Training, Enroll America staff and volunteers are working with community leaders to meet the uninsured where they are. In Chicago, for instance, a man who wasn’t home when volunteers initially knocked on his door read the flyer after they left, ran down the street to find them, and invited them into his home to explain the new insurance options to his entire family. Another man took extra brochures to share with his coworkers at the small landscaping company where he works, and asked an organizer to come meet with them to answer questions after their next shift.

On the Thursday before the “Treat Yourself to Coverage Weekend,” Get Covered America teamed up with Consumer Reports to host the “She Knows Telephone Town Hall Meeting” to talk to thousands of women across the country about the financial help available through the Marketplace. Filipic, joined by DeAnn Friedholm, Director of Health Reform for Consumer Reports, answered live questions from consumers about the enrollment process and opportunities to get help paying for an insurance plan. Using a mass dial-out platform, the call reached households throughout the country, with over 12,000 people listening throughout the call.
