Enroll America Kicks-off ‘Get Covered America’ Campaign with National Press Call

President Anne Filipic Discusses Grassroots Strategy to Engage Consumers About New Health Insurance Marketplaces

WASHINGTON – Today, Enroll America President Anne Filipic joined key players and volunteers to discuss this week’s launch of  “Get Covered America,” a grassroots movement dedicated to informing Americans about their health care coverage options starting this fall. Get Covered America is a nationwide effort to educate consumers about the new Health Insurance Marketplaces opening on October 1 that will give families the option to purchase affordable, quality health insurance.

Filipic was joined by Dr. Alice Chen, Executive Director of Doctors for America and Liz Moskowitz, a Get Covered America volunteer from Austin, Texas who was uninsured for several years because she couldn’t afford the premiums. Filipic gave an overview of the campaign strategy and grassroots efforts around the country, while Moskowitz spoke about her personal experience being uninsured, and Chen explained why this movement is so critical for patient care.

The following are highlighted excerpts from today’s call:

Anne Filipic, President, Enroll America

“There are nearly 50 million Americans without health insurance today who will soon be able to choose a quality, affordable health insurance plan that covers everything from doctor and hospital visits, to maternity care and prescriptions.”

“This week, the Get Covered America team and partners are hosting over 50 events in 18 states…volunteers will be starting the conversation – arming consumers with important information they’ll need when they’re shopping for insurance – including where they can go to get unbiased, no-nonsense help signing up for coverage, and how they can find out if they qualify for financial assistance.”

“This campaign is about the consumers.  We’re focused on reaching them with the information they need so they can make smart decisions.”

Liz Moskowitz, Get Covered America Volunteer from Austin, TX

“I am 25 years old and have struggled with health care costs on and off since I was 21. Both my parents are retired, so I’m unable to be on their plan. Health insurance plans were beyond my means at a rate of $300-400 a month, I just didn’t have the extra money. As a result had to pay more than $100 out of pocket for every time I visited a doctor, even for routine care.”
“It is a relief having the security of health insurance, knowing that if anything were to happen to me, I would be able to afford health care.”
“I’m getting involved with Get Covered America because I’ve lived this first-hand. I believe that this issue is critical for young adults, especially those like me who aren’t able to get coverage under their parents’ plan.”

Dr. Alice Chen, Executive Director, Doctors for America

“26,000 people every year are so afraid to get health care because of the cost that by the time they come to the hospital, it’s too late to save them.  The first time I lost a patient because he came too late, I felt so helpless that I knew something had to change.”

“For [patients], having health insurance has meant getting care when they need it so they can get back to the things that matter most to them.  Coverage is good medicine. The problem is, for 1 out of 7 people in America, getting sick or injured can mean the end of a dream.”

“Doctors for America [is] excited to join Get Covered America in this historic year for health care.  We’re hosting trainings sessions to get doctors and other health care providers up to speed on the basics of who can sign up and how.  We’re prepping posters and brochures for clinic waiting rooms.  We’re reaching beyond the health care world to churches and businesses in our communities to get people educated about their options.”
