Washington, DC – With the March 31 deadline quickly approaching, local leaders in communities across the country are joining Get Covered America to help consumers find new health care options and incredible savings through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Earlier this month, Michigan State Representative Rudy Hobbs and Get Covered America hosted an enrollment event at Wright State University in Detroit, where consumers were able to sit down with in-person assisters and explore their options and the financial help available through the Marketplace.

So far, 87% of enrollees in Michigan have received financial assistance to help them pay for their plan, like Elsie Brown, who will pay just 22 cents a month. For less than a dollar, she will receive the essential benefits of comprehensive coverage, with the peace of mind and financial security that comes with having health insurance. The daily “Countdown to Get Covered Series” features stories of creative events and consumer outreach from the frontlines of enrollment. The previous “Countdown to Get Covered” updates are available here.

On Saturday, March 8, State Representative Rudy Hobbs and Get Covered America organized the Wright State University event, combining in-person enrollment assistance, new outreach, and follow-up with consumers all happening at the same time.

Meeting with free in-person enrollment assisters from Wayne State University physician group and Angel Engagement Group, consumers got the chance to walk through their new options and take steps to enroll. Meanwhile, passionate Get Covered America volunteers joined State Representative Hobbs in making phone calls and fanning out in surrounding neighborhoods to educate even more consumers about their new options and mobilize them to enroll.

State Representative Hobbs explained why he got involved to help members of his community get covered.

“The Affordable Care Act has brought much-needed relief to individuals in our state. In order to take advantage of this historic opportunity, it’s important that consumers are aware of their new coverage options and the financial assistance available,” said State Representative Hobbs. “I encourage anyone who is uninsured or underinsured, and needs quality coverage, to get enrolled before the March 31st deadline.”
