Washington, DC – During the last two weeks of open enrollment, Get Covered America has been hosting daily enrollment events in key communities in all of its 11 staffed states to make sure consumers have access to in-person assistance. In the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina, Get Covered America has teamed up with local organizations to host the Get Covered Wake Enroll-a-Thon, featuring daily events across the county, to give uninsured Wake County residents the opportunity to enroll in affordable health insurance before the March 31 deadline. The daily “Countdown to Get Covered” series features stories of creative events and consumer outreach from the frontlines of enrollment. The previous “Countdown to Get Covered” updates are available here.

To kick off the week of enrollment events, Get Covered America, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Capital Care Collaborative, Wake Health Services, Inc., Urban Ministries of Wake County, MDC Inc., Alliance Medical Ministry, Disability Rights NC, St. Augustine’s University, White Oak Baptist Church and Zebulon United Methodist Church hosted a press conference Monday at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, featuring consumers who have successfully enrolled in the new Health Insurance Marketplace and are enjoying the benefits of their new affordable coverage.

Dr. Pamela Roshell, Regional Director of Region IV of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which covers ten states, touted North Carolina’s efforts to educate residents about the Marketplace. U.S. Representative David Price and N.C. State Representative Rosa Gill called on the uninsured to check out their options before the deadline.

Among the consumers who shared their stories was 26-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, Jeremy Reynolds, who had to go without insurance for two years after leaving the uniformed forces because the jobs he could find did not offer insurance – he couldn’t afford insurance on the individual market.

“It was tough to go for a long time without insurance,” Reynolds said. “There is a history of high blood pressure in my family and I really needed to visit doctors for checkups. For the years that I didn’t have insurance, I didn’t have peace of mind.”

Reynolds and his wife enrolled for health coverage in January and are paying a monthly premium of less than $30. They now have quality health insurance that covers what they need.

Uninsured North Carolinians can get free, in-person help from trained experts who can guide them through the application process and provide unbiased, honest information to help them choose plans that are right for them and their families at the daily enrollment events this week. Many took advantage of the opportunity to get the help Tuesday at an enrollment event at White Oak Baptist Church, Apex where in-person assistors saw more walk-in consumers than at previous events at the location. People can schedule appointments by calling 1-855-733-3711.
