Washington, DC – With just 10 days left of open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace, many Americans are taking action now to protect themselves from unexpected health emergencies. Some who have already enrolled are finding out first-hand what this means. Fortunately, their new coverage protected them from a costly surprise. While Medicaid enrollment will continue year-round, many are anxious to determine their Marketplace eligibility now. Two of those who signed up in the nick of time are profiled for this week’s #GotCovered installment. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Karen Marshall – Detroit, MI
When Karen’s temporary insurance expired after losing her job over three years ago, finding coverage on her own was nearly impossible. Denials for a seemingly ordinary pre-existing condition kept her from private insurance before the Health Insurance Marketplace opened on October 1, 2013. Fortunately, provisions in the Affordable Care Act made it possible to not only secure coverage, but also made it more affordable. Karen says she felt lucky just to be considered eligible. When Karen completed enrollment before the December deadline for coverage beginning January 1, she had no idea just how timely her luck was.
Days before 2014 and the start of her policy, she broke two bones in her wrists when she fell while traveling abroad. When she returned home, she immediately jumped on the phone with her new insurer so she could schedule appointments and surgeries with local doctors using her new policy. Karen says she’s grateful for her new silver tier coverage, which has already saved her thousands of dollars in the New Year.
Kellie Jean Roberts – Dayton, OH
The security of health care coverage allows Kellie to pursue her studies in social work free of concern that sickness or an accident might get in the way of her career. As she prepares to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in a month, she will have security knowing she can continue her clinical social work internship as she looks toward a full-time position with coverage.
When Kellie was unexpectedly hospitalized in early February, she secured Medicaid coverage in Ohio on the spot with the help of a Certified Application Counselor. As a full-time student at 22 years old, she says that this emergency could have meant thousands of dollars in medical bills, possibly keeping her from finishing her degree on time because of financial concerns. Instead, she was able to receive treatment that didn’t keep her from the degree she’s worked so hard for. Kellie is using her enrollment experience as an opportunity to tell others about their new options under the Affordable Care Act. Just this past week, her class organized an enrollment workshop for the Dayton community and she hopes she can help others realize the importance of coverage before it’s too late.
