Washington, DC – Get Covered America’s weekly #GotCovered series highlights consumers who have found coverage that fits their needs and their budget through health insurance marketplaces. This week focuses on stories of Americans who are excited to share their experience comparing new coverage options over the Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family in hopes they too might benefit under the Affordable Care Act. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Rebecca Haug – Del Norte, Colorado
After her husband passed away in 2007, Rebecca has gained and lost coverage repeatedly while working as a registered nurse. Her employers have cut back or closed up in tough times. At sixty-one years old, she is thankful for the certainty that her new marketplace plan offers.
“I am enrolled in the policy of my choice and can’t wait to use my new coverage for preventative health care coverage. Guaranteed insurance means everything to me and my family.”
Amy Lynn Smith – Detroit, Michigan
Amy is a freelance writer with type 2 diabetes, who was spending $1,400 a month for individual coverage because of her pre-existing condition. She found a comparable plan for just $530 a month at HealthCare.gov.
“My new plan’s benefits are as good as what I had before — if not better. The co-pays are affordable and there’s an annual out-of-pocket limit of $5,100. As someone whose income varies from month to month, I’m thankful to have a predictable monthly premium that covers 80 percent of my healthcare costs, with no expensive surprises if I ever have a serious injury or illness.”
Joe Lucas – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Joe considers himself a blue collar worker who has gone for periods without health insurance when he just couldn’t afford it. After suffering an aortic aneurysm, Joe knew he would benefit from the health insurance marketplace and not be discriminated against for his pre-existing condition.
“I am just thankful I can now afford a CT scan – which would cost $11,000 if I did not have health insurance – so that I can go to my cardiologist. Without the Affordable Care Act, I would be left with a disease that I could not be treated for.”
Erin Kotecki Vest – Los Angeles, California
Erin is a mom, diagnosed with lupus. She blogged about her experience finding coverage for her family after she added up the high out-of-pocket costs under her husband’s plan.
“We are getting $0 in subsidies. But we are saving at least $18,900 per year. For a family that is swimming in medical debt, with no end in sight, we can now see light at the end of the tunnel.”
