Washington, DC – Americans who received notification that their current health insurance policy will no longer be offered are finding out they can shop for new coverage options like they never had before on the Health Insurance Marketplace. For most consumers, this transition means improved insurance and financial help for the first time. Better plans at lower costs and the increased options in the marketplace allow these consumers greater freedom to find insurance that actually fits their needs.

Almost half of the people buying on the individual market today will be eligible for financial help for a plan on the new Marketplace. Another 1 million will be eligible for health care through Medicaid expansion. Moreover, new health insurance policies offered have valuable protections that weren’t in place in the private market before. About 43 percent with individual market plans have pre-existing conditions that can’t be discriminated against now. This is in addition to other basic benefits that are now required like mental health coverage, prescription drugs, and no annual caps on coverage. This week’s #GotCovered profile highlights one couple’s experience transitioning to their new coverage. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.

Bill and Linda Wood – Westerville, OH
When Bill was notified that he would have to transition from his old insurance policy to new coverage, he was concerned for what that would mean for him and his wife. Being self-employed meant shopping the private market for years had been an entirely disappointing experience. Pre-existing conditions narrowed their eligibility to just one policy that they paid a great deal for in monthly premiums. It was a plan they felt stuck with after Bill was laid off in 2007. Even worse, that premium had increased by 80 percent over the years.

When the new Health Insurance Marketplace opened October 1, Bill and Linda were among the first in line. Steady improvements to and help from the call center eventually allowed them access to shop and compare plans in November. Where they had only one choice for insurance coverage before, they now found over twenty options available to them. Most importantly, the tax credit they qualified for meant their premiums in 2014 would be significantly less – several thousand dollars less. Bill and Linda settled on a bronze tier plan based on the provider network it made available to them. Bill says that while the deductible they chose is higher, the savings and basic coverage that’s now guaranteed will make up for it many times over. With their tax credit, they will pay about $140 for a monthly premium when they had paid over $600 previously. They estimate savings of about $6,000 in 2014 and are reassured that this will be there if their health care needs change by the next enrollment period. As they plan for their retirement, Bill and Linda finally have the health care security they need.
