Washington, DC – This week’s #GotCovered profile highlights the difference a Marketplace makes in lowering health care costs for consumers. The opportunity to choose between several policies means consumers can find a plan that truly fits their needs. Weighing important factors like deductibles, co-pays, and provider networks, consumers are finding out what makes the most sense for them. For some, any insurance at all is a welcome relief from regular medical expenses that had previously been paid totally out-of-pocket. Financial assistance, that’s available based on income, is also helping families save on their monthly insurance premiums. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.

Dr. Rebecca Quigg – Riverside, IL

Shopping the private market for health insurance before October 1, 2013 was a nightmare for Rebecca, a Cardiologist and single mother. After leaving her employer-based position to become an independent medical consultant she transitioned to a temporary COBRA plan at $1,100 a month. Family coverage proved exorbitant, but fortunately her children were able to move to their father’s plan. Eventually in 2010, Rebecca found a policy that claimed it would cover pre-existing conditions. It turned out that it not only excluded coverage for her pre-existing conditions, but it also kept her from normal check-ups for fear that if something was found, the policy might be cancelled out from under her.

As a doctor, Rebecca could not believe she had to forego important preventive care and cancer screenings. Rebecca estimates the premium for her last policy increased 200 percent over the years — despite offering virtually no benefits. She was eventually paying over $900 a month by August 2013 for the plan. Moreover, her monthly prescriptions were becoming an additional burden. When October 1 arrived, Rebecca was ready for a new way forward.

As of January 1, 2014, Rebecca is covered by a gold tier option purchased through The premium is $300 a month less than her old coverage and her prescription costs are now just a $10 copay. Her deductible is comparably low at just $500 down from $2,500 previously. The value only starts there for Rebecca who believes the biggest savings will be the financial security this provides her. Even better, she knows that her coverage will not discourage her from important screenings for fear of costly out-of-pocket treatment or a policy cancellation.
