Washington, DC – When making any purchase, value is the first concern for shoppers. That’s why consumers in the new Health Insurance Marketplace are excited to find insurance coverage that keeps their families healthy and their budgets in the black. This week, Get Covered America is highlighting ‘super savers’ who are finding insurance with premium assistance that’s available based on their income. About 6 in 10 in the Marketplace can find coverage that costs $100 or less a month. Those who don’t qualify for assistance are also finding savings by shopping plans with lower deductibles or more comprehensive coverage for regular medical costs. For uninsured Americans like Joe and his family, this opportunity means everything. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Joseph Romzek – Troy, MI
Among Joe’s many worries when his employer unexpectedly down-sized this fall was the cost of finding health insurance for his family of four. His employer offered to partially cover COBRA continuation insurance as he searches for a new job, but that coverage was over $1600 a month, which he just couldn’t fit into his budget without a steady income. Having tried to shop the private market years ago, he thought his prospects for finding a better deal were dim until he applied for the Health Insurance Marketplace in November.
Joe says the insurance he found was well worth the time he spent on the hotline and navigating early HealthCare.Gov glitches. When he last shopped the private market in 2007 for him and his family, Joe was quoted premiums around $1300 a month, but the policy excluded family members with pre-existing conditions. The difference now? Financial assistance available through the marketplace brought their new silver level insurance policy down to $88 a month. Better yet, the whole family is covered – no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. With their savings, he was able to add a separate dental insurance plan. Joe is excited to revisit the marketplace with a new income estimate once he finds a new job. Until then, health insurance is one less worry for the Romzek family.
