Get Covered America’s #GotCovered Series: New Mexico Couple Received Cancellation Letter, Then Found A Better Health Insurance Plan on the Marketplace for $0 A Month

Because They Qualify for a Tax Credit, Elisabeth and Mark Horst from Albuquerque, NM Will Pay No Monthly Premium for Quality Health Coverage

Washington, DC – Get Covered America’s latest story in the weekly #GotCovered series highlights a husband and wife who have found coverage that fits their needs—and for which they will pay $0 a month—through the new Health Insurance Marketplaces. Mark and Elisabeth Horst are thrilled to have found an affordable insurance plan after being informed that their old plan would no longer be offered after 2013. Mark and Elisabeth Horst, 58 and 53 – Albuquerque, NM

Mark and his wife Elisabeth are both self-employed, full-time artists. Before the Health Insurance Marketplaces opened October 1, they had come to expect large premiums and minimal coverage from the private insurance options available to them on the individual market over the last few years. Even though the couple is in excellent health in their mid-fifties, they knew they had to have basic coverage. Their current catastrophic plan covers almost nothing, and costs them about $250 a month in premiums, but “not having insurance was just not an option,” says Mark.

After receiving a letter from their insurance company earlier this year informing them that their current plan would no longer be offered next year, Mark and Elisabeth decided to research their options on the new health insurance marketplace. After encountering a few wait times in early October, the couple gave the website some time to improve. A week later, they successfully completed their application for the marketplace and determined that they were eligible for a $612 monthly tax credit. Together, they selected a bronze plan that makes the most sense for them, and thanks to the tax credit, they will not pay any monthly premium for the plan.

Mark and Elisabeth say that because they are both in good health, this plan makes sense for them for now, but they can always revisit their options next year if their needs change. Parting ways with their old skimpy insurance plan that took a disproportionate chunk out of their pocketbook was an easy choice. They are very happy with their new affordable coverage that begins January 1. Mark and his wife are thankful for the marketplace making their dream of self-employment a worry-free reality.
