Rita Rizzo and Lou Vincent, from Akron, OH, Find Coverage Together in the New Health Insurance Marketplaces
Washington, DC – Get Covered America’s #GotCovered series includes a couple from Ohio who are eager to share their success this week on the new Health Insurance Marketplace. Rita Rizzo and Lou Vincent found an affordable insurance plan that will cover them both, after shopping the private marketplace for years. They shared their story on Get Covered America’s website. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Rita Rizzo and Lou Vincent – Akron, OH
Rita and her husband Lou are self-employed, and have struggled to find affordable private insurance for over a decade. Rita says that paycheck by paycheck they have happily built a comfortable life together despite one missing piece – affordable health care. Years ago, Rita had surgery for a hip replacement for which she no longer needs treatment. Lou has diabetes and also takes medicine for high blood pressure. Together, the couple has collected a file with over 30 insurance denials in it due to these pre-existing conditions. They were the three strikes the insurance companies used to deny the couple reasonable coverage together for a decade now.
Rita has only been able to find affordable insurance for herself. Her husband has gone uninsured as she pays $400 a month in premiums, with a hard to swallow $6000 deductible. For Lou’s high blood pressure medicine alone, they pay $170 out of pocket each month. Rita says the arrangement just isn’t sustainable as they get older, but she was growing tired of the rejections.
When the marketplace opened, the couple qualified for a subsidy that dropped their preferred silver option down to $184 a month in premiums. That’s almost what they pay just for Lou’s medicine each month. Now that they have received confirmation from their insurer, they are looking forward to coverage January 1. Rita and Lou will be insured together for the first time in years. The savings will mean a great deal for the couple, but nothing beats coverage that takes care of them both.
