Washington, DC – One in four young adults are currently without health insurance—higher than any other age group. Fortunately, that number is decreasing as more and more are finding out about the Health Insurance Marketplace and the financial assistance available to them. This week, dozens of health, youth, and charitable organizations are holding a week of action to educate uninsured young adults about their options and the March 31st deadline to enroll. This effort includes 100 education and enrollment events in cities across the country—concluding in National Youth Enrollment Day on Saturday, February 15th. Get Covered America’s weekly #GotCovered series highlights one young adult who has already found coverage that fits his needs and budget through HealthCare.gov. Like so many others at the start of their career, cost was a major concern for Sam Morey. Now, he’s covered for less than $25 a month. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Sam Morey, 29 – Pittsburgh, PA
It’s been a long road to quality, affordable coverage for Sam. Under his old insurance policy, he had been denied claims because of back spasms that have since subsided. The cost of care was $1200 dollars to treat the problem—well outside of what Sam could afford at the time. His spasms were considered a pre-existing condition meaning he would be on the hook for paying for care even though he was already paying about $100 a month in premiums for the policy. After some wrangling, his insurer eventually did cover the claim, but the experience was enough to sour him on insurance for a time. Sam dropped the policy and has gone uninsured since 2008.
This past Spring, Sam sprained his ankle and declined treatment after the doctor asked to run tests. Although Sam works full-time without benefits, paying for treatment out-of-pocket just wasn’t an option. He says, “Dealing with medical expenses that just crop up has been the hardest part.” But thanks to the HealthCare.gov, Samuel was able to enroll in a plan that began January 1. He has already used his insurance for a physical and is getting blood tests done to screen for chronic conditions that run in his family. In addition to a tax subsidy that drops his monthly premium to $21 dollars, he qualified for a cost sharing discount which also significantly reduced medical expenses beyond just the premium. Better yet, no worrying that his medical history can negate his coverage. Pre-existing conditions and surprise medical expenses are now a thing of the past.
