Get Covered America Launch Statement

100 Days From Open Enrollment, Hundreds of Volunteers Nationwide will be Talking to Thousands of Americans to Get the Word Out About New Insurance Options

WASHINGTON – With open enrollment in the new health insurance marketplaces just over 100 days away, Enroll America – the nation’s leading health care enrollment coalition – is launching the “Get Covered America” campaign to start a just-the-facts conversation with consumers about the benefits of health insurance coverage and the new health care options that will be made available under the Affordable Care Act starting October 1st.

“Thanks to the new health care law, millions of Americans will soon be able to choose an affordable health insurance plan that covers everything from doctor and hospital visits, to maternity care and prescriptions.  But too many people who will be eligible don’t know about it.  And we know that if they don’t know about it, they won’t take advantage of it,” said Anne Filipic, the President of Enroll America. “That’s where Get Covered America comes in.  It’s a national grassroots campaign using the best tools and tactics from previous successful marketing campaigns and enrollment efforts to engage Americans about their options and the new way to shop for health insurance. We’re working to get neighbors talking to neighbors, and friends talking to friends about the changes coming, and what the new law means for them and their families. We’re working with a wide range of partners to reach consumers where they are, with information they want and need.”

On October 1st, new health insurance marketplaces will open in every state that will allow people to compare prices and shop for health insurance – by phone, online, or in-person.  The insurance plans offered through the marketplaces will cover doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, prescriptions and more.  And there will be financial assistance available for many Americans.

However, a survey for Enroll America found that nearly 80% of the uninsured do not know about the new health care options that are becoming available.

Get Covered America is here to get the word out.

Get Covered America will have staff and volunteers on the ground in communities around the country engaging people directly by going door-to-door, talking to consumers at places like grocery stores and community centers, and working with local organizations – like community health centers, places of worship, and schools – to reach their constituents. A central component of the Get Covered America effort will be engagement with young people, key minority communities, and women. The campaign will work closely with its partners to ensure that every community knows and understands what the new law will mean for them.

Kicking off the campaign this week, the Get Covered America team and partners are hosting over 50 events in 18 states, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.  At strategy sessions, public events, and by going door to door, volunteers will be starting the conversation – arming consumers with important information they’ll need when they’re shopping for insurance – including where they can go to get unbiased, no-nonsense help signing up for coverage, and how they can find out if they qualify for financial assistance.

Get Covered America is also hosting a national virtual strategy session this week, where interested volunteers will learn about the campaign and how to inform their communities about the enrollment process.  And the campaign is launching online and social media communications and will ultimately include a paid advertising campaign to help people learn what they need to know.

Get Covered America already has strong, enthusiastic support from volunteers and partners:

“I know first-hand the stress and cost of not having health insurance,” said Liz Moskowitz, a 25-year old Get Covered America volunteer in Austin, Texas. “I’m relieved to finally have the peace of mind that comes with having quality health coverage and I’m excited to help Get Covered America spread the word to young people like me, who will no longer have to worry about access to affordable health care.”

“As a physician, I’ve seen too many patients suffer because they don’t have insurance and can’t afford the care they need, which is why I work with colleagues across the country to advocate for affordable, high quality health care,” said Dr. Alice Chen, the Executive Director of Doctors for America, one of the partner organizations supporting Get Covered America. “This health care law will save lives, and doctors and medical students across the country are proud to partner with Get Covered America to help inform and empower the millions of uninsured Americans who stand to benefit.”
