Largest Grassroots Outreach Effort Yet by Get Covered America Campaign Blankets Communities Across U.S.

More Than a Thousand Volunteers Participate in More than 200 Events Over Weekend to Raise Awareness About New Health Insurance Marketplaces; Partnership with CVS/pharmacy Launched with 30 In-Store Events

Washington, DC — This past weekend, staff and more than a thousand volunteers from the Get Covered America campaign reached out to Americans in communities across the country with word about the new health insurance options that will be available beginning October 1. As part of the “Get the Word Out Weekend” push, volunteers had just-the-facts conversations about the new Health Insurance Marketplaces on porches, at barbershops and farmer’s markets, over the phone, and at community events across the country. Working in partnership with CVS, Get Covered America representatives were also on hand to answer questions about the new health care options at free health screening events at 30 CVS/pharmacy locations across the country.

“Excitement is building for the new, affordable health insurance plans that will be available to Americans across the country in less than three weeks,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “More than a thousand volunteers joined us this weekend to help spread the word, and in conversation after conversation, they found that people in their communities are eager to look at their options side by side on the new Health Insurance Marketplaces coming October 1. That’s why we’re making sure uninsured Americans have the facts they need to make the best decision for them and their families.”

Since Enroll America launched the Get Covered America campaign in June, more than 3,400 volunteers have joined the push to raise awareness about the upcoming changes in their communities, including over 400 new volunteers trained this past weekend. 1,026 volunteers came out last weekend for the biggest outreach effort yet, with 211 events in 15 states ranging from neighborhood canvasses in Cleveland, to a meeting hosted by community organizations that drew over 400 people in Houston. In all, 59 local organizations joined Get Covered America at “Get the Word Out Weekend” events, including partners like MomsRising, Doctors for America, Voto Latino, and Planned Parenthood. The faith community also helped to educate the uninsured about their options through 23 “Health Care from the Pulpit” events across the country.

Representatives from Get Covered America also joined CVS/pharmacy at 30 Project Health events this weekend to educate consumers about their new health insurance options. Project Health is a CVS/pharmacy program that provides free preventive health screenings in communities across the United States. From September through November, more than 375 Project health events will be held at select CVS/pharmacy locations in 10 cities across the country, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. CVS has found that 45 percent of previous attendees were uninsured, and Get Covered America will be available during Project Health events in September to provide consumers with information about their coverage options under the new health care law.

On October 1, the new Health Insurance Marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act will open in every state, for the first time giving the uninsured and underinsured access to side-by-side, just-the-facts comparisons of affordable, comprehensive insurance options. Consumers will be able to speak to an expert – by phone, online, or in-person – to help them choose a plan that is right for them, and financial assistance will be available to those who need it. The private health care plans offered on the new marketplaces will cover all the important benefits: doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, prescriptions and more.
