Washington, DC – Today, Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America, issued the following statement regarding the initial enrollment numbers that the Department of Health and Human Services released this afternoon:

“The enrollment numbers released today confirm what we have been expecting – the problems with the website have indeed slowed enrollment, but Americans are hungry for the affordable, comprehensive coverage offered by the Health Insurance Marketplace and more than 1.5 million consumers have already submitted an application for coverage. We are encouraged that more than 500,000 consumers have found coverage through a private plan, Medicaid or CHIP. That is more than half a million people who, come January 1st, will no longer have to choose between paying the utility bill or paying for preventive care, who will no longer have to worry that a surprise illness might result in bankruptcy. While tens of thousands of people have been able to enroll through HealthCare.Gov, there is clearly much work yet to be done before the website is functioning properly and all consumers are able to access the financial assistance and plans for which they are eligible. We know from past enrollment efforts that numbers are always low in the beginning, and we’re still just over a month into a 6-month process. Our Enroll America team is ready for the challenge – our hundreds of staffers and thousands of volunteers have already spoken with tens of thousands of uninsured consumers, and when the website is working, we’ll follow up with them personally to make sure they are able to successfully enroll.”
