My Summer as a Get Covered America Fellow
August 27, 2015
This is a guest blog from Jeffrey, a Get Covered America Fellow in Ohio.
During the summer of 2015, I was a Get Covered America Fellow in Ohio. Overall, it was a great experience because I got to help people who have been struggling without insurance finally get covered, and I learned a lot along the way.
My coworkers were great. It was a friendly work environment and we kept each other laughing; we also helped support one another when it came to the day-to-day work. When we did tabling outreach at Columbus State, we decided to make a competition around who got the most commit cards. (Bragging rights are super motivating, FYI.)
Tabling and being able to shadow a Certified Application Counselor (CAC) to learn about enrollment were some of my favorite parts of the summer I spent with GCA. Now, I can help people understand their options and let them know they could get insured for free or at a low cost. It’s great to help clear up misconceptions about health insurance. When I call people who have trouble with health insurance and need assistance, it’s so motivating to know that I’m helping people and that the work I am doing helps my community.
Overall, being a GCA Fellow has been a valuable experience. The Fellowship has helped me explore some career options and learn about myself — all while helping people in my community. I hope I can continue helping my community now and in my future career.
