Surprised by the Fine? Starting Sunday, Ohioans May Have a Second Chance to Get Covered through the Affordable Care Act
March 12, 2015
COLUMBUS, OH – The deadline to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act has passed, but uninsured or underinsured Ohioans who were unaware of the fine for not having coverage may still have the opportunity to get quality, affordable health coverage now through special enrollment periods. This year, some consumers might be eligible for a new special enrollment period for this year’s tax-filing season that gives uninsured Ohioans who did not realize they would be fined for not enrolling in health coverage another opportunity to enroll in a plan for 2015.
The tax-filing special enrollment period will begin this Sunday, March 15 and run until April 30 this year. It will be open to consumers who confirm that they are subject to the fine on their 2014 taxes, and were previously unaware of the impact of the fine.
“This new special enrollment period will give Ohioans another chance to get covered this tax season,” said Get Covered America Ohio State Director Trey Daly. “Many Ohioans are unaware that financial help is available to purchase a plan, and they may not learn about the fine for not having coverage until they are filing their taxes. That’s why we’ll continue to let Ohioans know the tax implications of going without health insurance and this new opportunity to get quality, affordable health coverage.”
Consumers may also qualify for other special enrollment periods if they’ve experienced a qualifying life event such as losing coverage, getting married, having a baby, moving to a different coverage area, and becoming a citizen, among others. And adults under the age of 65 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level ($16,243 for an individual or $33,465 for a household of four) are eligible Medicaid, which has year-round enrollment.
If you think you might be eligible to enroll through a special enrollment period or Medicaid, Ohioans can schedule an appointment with a free enrollment assister by visiting the Get Covered Connector at connector.getcoveredamerica.org. To find out if you have experienced a qualifying life event, you can visit the HHS screener and answer a few questions.
