Tax-filing special enrollment period now through April 30

March 26, 2015

We all know the enrollment period ended Feb. 15, but some Texans may still be able to enroll in a health care plan now through April 30.

A few weeks ago the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a tax-filing special enrollment period.  So what does this mean? It’s an opportunity for those individuals who did not have health insurance through the marketplace; didn’t know how the fine would affect them; and are subject to the fine on their 2014 taxes, to sign up for coverage.

It allows consumers to get covered for this year and ensure they won’t be responsible for another full fine on their taxes next year – which will increase to $325 per adult or two percent of their income, whichever is greater.

Texans who may qualify can take advantage of this tax-filing special enrollment period by going to the Get Covered Connector at to make a free in-person appointment with an assister in their community.
