Young & Healthy Need Coverage Too
July 31, 2013
When you’re young and healthy, the world can be yours to conquer. And when you’re young and healthy, you may think that you don’t need health insurance. But scan any local news outlet, and it’s clear that no one is invincible. Accidents happen every day—about 30,000 car accidents daily, according to the latest Census data. That’s about 11 million car accidents a year. Plus, more than 4 million accidents involve pedestrians. Because NOBODY crosses the street while texting or with headphones on, right? These are the kinds of worrisome things that keep moms up at night, by the way.
Take Ryan, who is young, carefree, and uninsured. A few weeks ago, he was in a car accident. Even though he was wearing a seat belt, he suffered a broken neck, and is now paralyzed. Without health insurance, each medical cost must now come out of his own pocket. His mom and dad had to set up a special fund to pay for the tens of thousands of dollars in hospital and medical bills for Ryan’s recovery–and pray for the kindness of friends and family to help.
These are just some of the health care inequities that the Affordable Care Act was designed to fix. No one should go bankrupt over medical bills. In this new video by healthcare.gov, it states that the average three-day hospital stay is $30,000 without insurance. Just a broken leg can run an uninsured person $7,500. Why risk it if you don’t have to?
Beginning in October, young people can choose a health insurance plan that fits their budget and their lifestyle. Many young adults can now stay on their parents’ family insurance plan until age 26. But if that’s not an option, then young people will have several choices available through the Health Insurance Marketplace. People under 30 or with limited incomes can get catastrophic coverage, which covers limited services such as hospitalizations and emergency care. But hey, before you sign up, be sure to compare all your coverage options first: You may find a comprehensive plan that’s affordable and gives you a lot more health care. The key word here? Choices. So whatever plan you choose, just get covered. Better to be protected from the unexpected—so you can go live your fabulous, young life to the fullest. And your mom will be able to sleep better at night.
